a window project by a sequence of APT artists

Images of the Portals (click to enlarge)

Below is the sequence of windows in order of how they occurred.

As this covered a period from March to early May the lighting conditions were extremely varied which is reflected in the brightness, contrast and colour saturation. Added to this were the weather conditions that, being during a UK Spring, were also extremely varied.

The curator would like to thank all the artists who agreed to take part, often at short notice, Steve and David for putting up the boards and APT for the use of the window.

Shutters open Thursday to Sunday 1 - 6 pm

Project Portal was a weekly rotating window display by a sequence of APT artists until the main gallery program could restart on the 20th May 2021.

Each week featured the work of a different artist in order to show to the public the range of artwork that is carried out here in the studios.

There was also be a panel on the window which described the work on show and also some background about the artist and the ideas that underlie their practice.

All the work in this exhibiton is based on and inspired by the natural world. The work attempts to highlight the threat and destruction of the environment mainly through the animals whose habitat it is. Recent terrible events such as the Australian Bush Fires inspired a set of wood cut prints of which three are in this exhibition.

We are faced with the implacability of the Sun's photosphere, the mystery of what it is and what lies beyond. In this, the role of sunspots is critical. Sunspots are the portals through which we traverse down to the actual surface of the Sun. Looking down into this umbra we are blinded by the surrounding brilliance and can see but blackness; that is except for the little studied 'umbral flashes'.

These artworks reflect my recurring interest in the subversion of the modes of display in sculpture, and alternative techniques in building forms. Whilst "formal" in the sense that the works exist in space, and they are sculpted objects, there`s a lot going on which undermines this formality - non-classic materials, jokiness, a tussle with the idea of the plinth, overwrought narrative. It`s paradoxical to be operating within the sculptural idiom whilst questioning its syntax, and yet this refreshes the spirit of enquiry.

Both these paintings were made in 1993, in a series of many, when I was exploring how the eye moves up and down the tall narrowness of the painting, but also in and out of its colour space, as if in a slow dance. The shapes that intrigued me at the time were ones I could make with the least movement of the brush, yet were still evocative of forms in the world - bell, skirt, petal, and so on.

Steve Lewis + David Webb

Stephen Lewis and David Webb explore the relationship between their work in terms of colour, shape and scale. Taking subject matter from a wide range of sources, both could be said to assemble in their chosen medium; something of the language of collage - hard edges, silhouettes; then lyrical and strange forms.

The plinth sculptures are products from this last year. Playing with line, form and space, I reference various sources within architecture, natural systems, and the body's relationship to these.

By constructing in a modular rhythm of replicated and changing units of found object and shape with added colour, I'm interested in both opening and containing space, looking for that 'otherness' - a balance of order, chaos, mood and meaning.

The wall sculpture is an older open version of the new skirting board plinth piece made in quieter times.

While the motif I have used is an eclipse sequence of two planet-like entities in space, the generic title 'Kiss' and the spine-like orientation is intended to humanise those visual phenomena.

The 'Vampire' series emerged from an extended stay in the Gloucestershire countryside, house -sitting and dog-walking the artful Nancy and witnessing the bloodthirsty exploits of Dodger, the cat . The holes in the surface of this series of varying red surfaces act as piercings in a skin or membrane, connecting the inside to the exterior world.

Both these titles refer back to Edvard Munch, whose show at the Hayward Gallery many years ago inspired me to embark on an art school education .
